Portrait of a faceless gentleman!

I had to buy this .. what’s the story? why has this fine gentleman’s face gone? I have had all kinds of ideas.. his wife was angry with him so used it as a dartboard being the favourite!! I think it’s more likely that it cracked when the painting was re-lined at some point in its history .Anyway, it’s a great conversation piece and really quirky. The painting is an oil on canvas and is really fine - great for a country house vibe.
